Arriva Trains Wales operate most train services in Wales, including almost all of those which are wholly within Wales. Services from Swansea, Cardiff and Newport to and from London are operated by First Great Western, whilst those from North Wales (Holyhead, Bangor, Rhyl and Wrexham) to London are operated by Virgin Trains.

There are four main routes along which Arriva Trains Wales services operate - the north Wales main line from Holyhead and Bangor to Chester; the South Wales main line from Newport via Cardiff and Swansea to Pembroke, Fishguard (for ferry services to Ireland) and Milford Haven; the Cardiff - Manchester and North Wales route via Hereford, Shrewsbury, Wrexham and Chester; and the Cambrian lines from Birmingham, Telford and Shrewsbury across central Wales to Aberystwyth, Barmouth and Pwhelli. Arriva Trains Wales also operates the many 'Valley Lines' services from Cardiff, and the highly scenic 'Heart of Wales' line from Shrewsbury to Swansea via Llandrindod Wells and Llanelli.

The company's flagship service is the daily Holyhead - Cardiff service via Bangor, Chester, Crewe, Shrewsbury, Hereford and Newport which conveys first class accommodation and a restaurant service.

Otherwise Arriva Trains Wales services operate with Standard Class accommodation only, though many of the longer-distance services convey at-seat catering.

About Arriva Trains

Arriva Trains Wales began operating the new 15- year integrated Arriva Trains Wales/Trenau Arriva Cymru franchise in December 2003. The franchise provides inter-urban, rural and commuter passenger rail services throughout Wales and the English border counties.

The network stretches from Manchester through north and south Wales and across to Birmingham and Gloucester operating a fleet of 120 trains covering a route of over 1,009 miles.

Arriva Trains Wales provides rail services from all the main train stations of Wales including: Cardiff, Newport and Swansea and provides links to major cities in England such as Birmingham and Manchester. Arriva Trains Wales provide high speed train services for long distance journeys, as well as one carriage, slower trains for shorter, local journeys.

Arriva Trains Wales manages almost all the rail routes in and out of Wales, with the exception of four routes which are run by other train operating companies. These mainly provide links to London train stations.
